OpenSoon

Regions / Scotland

Reach Scotland's new restaurants, cafés and bars, from Edinburgh to the Highlands.

OpenSoon is a weekly B2B list of every restaurant, café, takeaway, pub and hotel that registers, opens or closes in Scotland, taken from the council food registers. Suppliers and sales teams get it every Monday as CSV and Excel, with each venue's stage, Companies House match and business contacts where found, for £99 a month.

Scotland runs its own food hygiene scheme. Instead of a 0 to 5 rating, the Food Hygiene Information Scheme gives a Pass or Improvement Required result. We read all 32 council registers in that scheme and treat the first published result as the venue's opening.

Covers Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Stirling, Perth, Paisley and every other council area in Scotland.

The Scotland market

Edinburgh and Glasgow account for a large share of new Scottish venues. Edinburgh's openings peak before the August festivals, and Glasgow adds bars, restaurants and cafés in the Merchant City, Finnieston and the West End all year.

Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Stirling and Perth follow, and the Highlands and islands add hotels, inns and cafés along the tourist routes, often timed for the spring.

Registers and fields

All 32 Scottish councils are unitary and publish under FHIS, which is run with Food Standards Scotland. Their registers reach the FSA's open data in the same format as the rest of the UK.

Scheme: Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS): Pass or Improvement Required.

Questions

How do I get a list of new restaurants opening in Scotland?

Subscribe to the Scotland feed for £99 a month. Every Monday you get that week's newly registered, newly opened and closed food businesses in Scotland as CSV and Excel, plus a private web page with past weeks. Venues register with the council 28 days before trading, so many are on the list before they open. A free sample is available first.

What fields are missing for Scotland?

Crime level comes from data.police.uk, which doesn't cover Scotland. Flood zones, heritage and energy certificates come from England and Wales sources. Everything else (stage, company match, website, business contacts) works the same.

How do you tell when a Scottish venue opens?

We take the first published FHIS result (Pass or Improvement Required) as the sign that the venue was trading when the officer inspected it.
